materials: scissors, measuring tape, and a rectangular piece of fabric (approximately 60 inches long).

Step 1: Fold the fabric in half from left to right.
Step 2: With the measuring tape, measure six inches down and six inches over from the folded side. Then cut an eight inch vertical slit.
Step 3: Open up the fabric and there should be two openings for your arms to go through.

That's it! Easy breezy right? This is a very versatile piece with many different styling options. It also works great if you want to pack light for your travels. Please, please credit and link back to Behind the Seams when using this tutorial. Thanks!!

Perfect! Just made one for myself - couldn't have been easier. Must get some black to make another one to go with everything :) This could be my new favourite thing to wear. Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea and very cheap to dress up any outfit..Thanks for the idea
ReplyDeleteStephanie
Saw this on pinterest and just completed it myself! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteVicki
this is a great idea!! how much fabric do you suggest using?
ReplyDeletelove that !!! very creative and so easy ...
ReplyDeletethanx a lot
Carole
Can't wait to try this!
ReplyDeletethis was perfect, and it took less than five minutes! you're a genius.
ReplyDeleteBut if you fat (like me) you could probably try this but upsize everything a little. Use 1.5 yrds and instead of 6" down and over measure your back and remove about 10% then divide in half to know how far from the folded edge to cut.
ReplyDeleteIt takes all sizes!
This is AWESOME! I am wondering if any savey crafters outt here could tell me how to figure this same pattern out for a little girl? This is here favortie style right now, pairing this type of vest over any ole t-shirt, I would love to make her a few... She's my niece, so she doesn't live with me but is wearing a size 8/9 (little girl). Any and all advise would be appreciated!!!
ReplyDelete~Angel
i tried this worked great! Thanks for the diy!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME !!! my daughter is so getting one of these for Christmas. THANKS
ReplyDeleteWhat's the best fabric to use? I want to make one tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI tried this. I bought the 60 inches of fabric like you suggested. You didn't list the width and lenght and from mine, I call tell you that you need both. The width of the fabric was too long so we are going to have to cut some off. Have you had this problem? If so, what would you say is the avearage length you need. Also, for a heavier set person, the arm hole will probably be bigger. By the way, my mom used one of her old jersy gowns and made one. It was the perfect length and width. Too cute!!!
ReplyDeleteJust tried this, way to long in the back. Goes to the floor will have to cut some off. Don't know how wide the material should be. Please help.
ReplyDeleteThank you
I made one and it turned out great. Soooo easy.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this! I found it on Pinterest and knew my daughter would love it!Took less than 5 minutes to make and I know she will want more!
ReplyDeletethank you!!!!
It's gorgeus <3

Thanks for inspiring simplicity!
ReplyDeleteRebecca
What type of fabric did you use?
ReplyDeleteThis is soooo simple yet amazing! Great Idea I will be excited to try! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this tutorial, I found it on Pinterest. I have been able to use up some jersey fabric that I have had for a while, although I have made mine in a longer length so it can be worn as a wrap dress. Thanks for sharing and I have made sure I linked back to your page as this is a tutorial to share- even for a beginner sewer to have a go! http://debrafied.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/helloomgoodness-is-this-like-most.html
ReplyDeleteVery good idea! Your link is on my blogspot. If you want to see it: http://ikhouvanwolland.blogspot.nl/2012/06/zwak-voor-afval.html
ReplyDeletewith friendly regards,
Janine
I made several for family and me. I love it
ReplyDeleteLooking to make this! really excited about it! I have some questions for who has made it: would 1 yard of fabric cover this, or would I need more? Also, what kind of fabric have you used? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLooks really cute! What kind of fabric would you say is best to use?
ReplyDeletewaouh.... a french fan
ReplyDeletewouahou!!!!! from France
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful but I wish the photos or fabric were lighter so I could see the detail better. I plan to make this so it would help. THank you for your post though, you look very cool in this! : )
ReplyDeleteJust made this out of cream colored washable wool...very lightweight. Think I will really enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteOne question...how wide was your fabric? Mine seems very long compared to yours, but this was wide fabric...didn't measure it. I'd had yards of it for a long time, so it was FREE, as far as I'm concerned.
Just made this, though the tutorial had been on my Pinterest page a long time.
ReplyDeleteOne question...what was the width of your fabric? Mine seems long compared to yours, but this was 54" wide fabric. Think I'm really going to like wearing it.
60 inches long but how wide?
ReplyDeleteWould the measurements be the same for larger women? 6 down and 6 in?
ReplyDeleteI measured 10in down and 10in cross and then made a 10in cut for arm hole it worked great!!
DeleteI made 10in measurement and a 10in cut for arm holes , it worked great !!
DeleteHi, I'm also wondering what the ideal width of this project is (or at least, the width that you used in this example). Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI just tried this and I'm gonna make another. I had the fabric for over 2 years and now I'm putting them to real good use. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI will be featuring your blog in my next article In The Tor Stone Newsletter . I the link in the article for your full credit.
ReplyDeleteI have the same questions as above...60 inches long but what's the width? Also would you use the same measurements for plus size women?
ReplyDeleteThanks
I have the same questions as above...60 inches long but how wide? Also Would the measurements be the same for plus size women? 6 down and 6 in?
ReplyDeleteThanks
This is FAB!
ReplyDeleteSo simple yet so elegant! Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteNeed more information, was it a scarf you started with or fabric. IF so what type of fabric and you said 60 inches. Is that the width or height. Maybe I am slow but I don't get it.
ReplyDeletebdtliv@msn.com
Very original.. thanx! Jenna
ReplyDeleteI did it and it turned out absolutely adorable!! I measured 6 inches down and 6 1/2 inches in from the fold. That made it fit better for me. Thanks for the post. It was awesome.
ReplyDeleteVery cute! What type of fabric could I use?
ReplyDelete
